In simple terms, imagine wooden blocks. Each block is a module, and designed for a specific purpose. For example, a client portal where the client fills out a form and submits is one wooden block. A payment portal where we accept fees through credit card is another module. When these modules are linked, they provide a system that can be utilizied by the organization.
